One thing you may have noticed with the set is the appearance of positions such as 2B-SS, SS-2B, 1B-3B, and so forth. The reason for that is another nod to 1986 Topps. In that set the generic position IF or "infielder" does not appear once. I like the more definitive positioning that this entails. Just another of the little things that 1986 Topps does well. Let's take a look at the second half of Tampa Bay.
My Top 5 Rays Cards
1. Sam Fuld
2. Jeff Keppinger
3. Kyle Farnsworth
4. Hideki Matsui
5. Chris Gimenez
The Rays were a difficult team to choose a top 5 for because a lot of the photos for this team are rather ordinary. Nothing really stood out, but that's okay because it's that way in most sets. Not every team gets the best photos and every card can't be memorable or else none of them are. That being said, I do like the Fuld card. It looks like he is about to take flight. The Keppinger is interesting because of the angle of the photo. It's almost like the pitcher is taking the shot. Farnsworth is nice specifically for the fake throwback uniform. I do not necessarily agree with the idea of faking throwbacks, but as an expansion team you should be allowed to play too. I chose Matsui not because it is particularly great, but because it is a probable end of career card. Although the facial expression does note his time in Tampa rather well. Gimenez is a nice photo, but on another team it wouldn't be top 5. Here though it is just unusual enough to be noted.
Thanx for reading.
