A place where Colorado Rockies baseball card collectors (all 3 of us) can waste some time reading about our favorite sport. The Rockies and their cards will be the primary focus, but I like to go off on tangents as well so anything and everything baseball related may be covered here.

Trade Bait - Hits (and a couple of non-Hits) Edition

Hey guys, it's been a while since I have had a good old-fashioned trade bait post.  I hope to get back to normal posting this week as most of my non-group break stuff has been lacking (to say the least).  I have a lot going on in real life (nothing tragic or anything...just busy) over the past 2-3 months, so the blog had to suffer a bit.  This post will hopefully prove to be a rebirth of sorts and get everything going strong once again.

Now for the reason you actually clicked here.  The trade bait, which arrived to me via group breaks, eBay purchases to get discount shipping, and other various ways.  Here you go and CLAIM AWAY.  These are just the pics and are available to the first claimer that has a Rockie (or Dave Parker) relic or auto that I need.

Gotta love a game-used "base" card. *UPDATE* both of these are claimed

The Schilling is a buyback from a 2005 set.

The two above Willises are currently claimed by wickedortega and involved in a pending trade.

BABenny has dibs on the three here since he asked about a month ago for them.
*UPDATE* All 3 gone

These are Dennis' if he needs them.  I really like the lace hole in the ball on Terrell.
*UPDATE* Both claimed

The Marshall is #'d to 20, the other 3 are base not numbered, but there were 50 produced.
*UPDATE* Marshall and Nieuwenhuis claimed

*UPDATE* Both claimed

*UPDATE* Honus gone.

If there are any questions about any of these just ask below.  I am not in a hurry to move anything, so just make a claim if you want something and we can work out a deal in time.

Hobby Box Break - 2011 Topps Series 2 (Aaron Crow mojo)

Well after saying that 2011 Topps Series 1 was something I wasn't going to pursue, I did not purchase a box.  And until value packs (great idea Topps!) I hardly bought any.  I was happy to trade for the Rockies team set and a handful of rookie cups and like Cub fans, wait til next year.  After the value packs, which I mostly bought for DG codes and the two Heritage packs I realized I was pretty close to having Series 1 finished.  So I might as well, get the set.  I got this box for $54 shipped so not a bad price at all.

I did pretty good with this box

Base Set - 280/300
Doubles - 0!  (this is why I love Topps flagship hobby boxes)
Goldies - 4
Blacks - 1
HOF Relics - 1
A cool Yankee "card" - 1
Platinum Diamond Sparklies - 9
Kimball Minis - 9
Diamond Stars - 6 (great new insert set)
Before there was Topps - 2 (also interesting)
Diamond Duos - 9 (still boring)
60 YOT Regular - 12
60 YOT Original - 1
Topps 60 - 9
Toppstown - 6! (I was expecting 36, I am now happier)
DG Codes - 6
Prime 9 Redemptions - 2

Whew

Here are some pics

This box had some serious Aaron Crow-jo.  I got a nice little rainbow of him.  The black is of course #'d to 60.

Roy Halladay is the only other gold of note (a Padres scrub and a Royals team card are the others).  The Diamond Duos is just as dull in this series.

Here are the 2 new inserts for series 2.  I actually like them both.  The Diamond Stars look really great in person.  The Before there was Topps looks at companies from pre-1952.  I like the write ups and will probably try to get this set.

Here are my Cards Your 60 Year Old Mother Threw Out or whatever they are called this year.  How long before they start reprinting some commons in a set called Cards you Wish Your Mother Threw Out.

Yes this is a (mainly) Rockies site, but I had to show off two Dodgers that I don't despise.  Even though Jackie Robinson ranks right up there with Cal Ripken Jr. in terms of overrated "legendary" ballplayers.  No offense to his great legacy, but his contributions are more cultural than player-related.  Sandy Koufax was just awesome no matter what uniform he wore.

I got the only Toppstown I cared about.  I am thrilled they made them a 1:6 insert rather than 1 per pack.  It sort of makes them feel a little more special.  They still suck, but not as much now.

I still don't see the appeal of these cards, but I will say the color on the Adam Jones does work very well with the Platinum Diamond sparklies.

Topps gave me good news and bad news.  The good news is, I got 2 prime 9 redemption cards instead of the 1 I was expecting.  The bad news is there is no HTA store anywhere close to me.  Does anyone have one near them, so I can send these with a trade package and get them back with a return package?

My relic is of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson.  Sadly it is not a green and/or gold jersey from the A's, but a Yankee swatch without pinstripes.  Yankees swatches should ALWAYS have a pinstripe.  This one is up for grabs, with BABenny having dibs.

More Yankee goodness.  I didn't get a sparkle or a legend SP, but I did get a silk.  And it is of a good player on a team that people collect.  I will give Dennis dibs on this one since his blog is named after Curtis.  I understand if you decline since he is now part of the Evil Empire.

June Quarry Group Break - Bonus Bonanza "Blaster"

Hey guys it's BONUS time.  Instead of a discount blaster I decided to pick up something with a guaranteed hit for someone.  There are only 3 packs of cards and 1 hit, but I figured that was better than 5-8 packs of a random set with very little chance of a hit.  BTW, the hit we got is of a future Hall of Famer on a team he is not really known for.  Who is it?  Well let's read on.

pack one

2006 Upper Deck First Pitch
11 John Smoltz - Braves
141 Nick Swisher - Athletics
36 Mark Prior - Cubs
88 Roy Oswalt - Astros

Insert (Diamond Stars)
DS-28 Moises Alou - Giants (consolation prize)

33 Scott Kazmir - Devil Rays
334 Vinny Rottino - Brewers
343 Doug Slaten - Diamondbacks
16 Lyle Overbay - Blue Jays
mini
153 Rickie Weeks - Brewers (consolation prize)

inserts
Rookie Sensations
RS-JS Jeremy Sowers - Indians
Year in Review
YR-HO Ryan Howard - Phillies

pack three

2007 Topps Series One Jumbo? Pack (22 cards 1 piece of gum)...and yes I did chew it, it was surprisingly good

23 Josh Bard - Padres
166 Hank Blalock - Rangers
3 Brad Lidge - Astros
117 David Ross - Reds
305 Frank Thomas - Blue Jays
277 Philip Humber - Mets
53 Mike Piazza - Athletics

102 NAMELESS 2nd BASEMAN - Dodgers
61 Jason Grilli - Tigers
67 Geoff Jenkins - Brewers
234 Team Card - Pirates
238 Team Card - Phillies

The Hit

2006 Upper Deck Amazing Greats game used PANTS!

AG-RJ Randy Johnson - Yankees (wow what a forgettable stint)

Congrats to Ryan G. for getting the hit.  Now you should really feel bad for sniping me. hehe j/k

The funny thing about this bonus blaster is the unpurchased Brewers nearly doubled their cards from 7 to 12.  The consolation prizes will be distributed below to the teams with the fewest inserts (Alou) or parallels (Weeks).

First the Alou (3 eligible Twins, Reds, Padres) randomed 3 times (only showing the 3rd)

Congrats to Rangers fan Brian who now gets a card of another team that is not his favorite.  The Alou is a good looking card though, even though the team reeks.

Second the Weeks (14 eligible teams including mine...if I win the card will go to the worst scoring  team via stats, the Reds) randomed 3 times (only showing the 3rd)

There you go, Ted.  I personally like the Fleer minis better than the base set.  The white border on cardboard stock make the main set seem to be from the overproduction era (ie cheap).  The minis are full bleed and still cheap, but they don't look cheap.

Congrats to the winners although this randomization was kind of anticlimactic following the previous cards given away.  I hope everyone enjoyed the second break here at the Quarry, especially you first timers.  I will be doing another break starting in the second week of July.  I honestly have no idea what I will be breaking then, but suggestions are always welcome and you all are invited to join up again.  Cards for this break will be going in the mail this weekend.  Until we meet for the next break, I will be returning to regularly scheduled programming.

What have we learned.  One, I should never compare myself to Mr. Wizard, that man was a genius.  Two, only one team (Red Sox) repeated in the top 5 from last month to this month.  Three, I am glad no one spent money on the Brewers, which is weird because last month the Brewers were mid-pack.  Finally, we learned that SOMEONE needs to buy the Astros, 6th last month with one hit and 2nd this month with a Bagwell Gold Refractor.  Congrats to Spiegel for "winning" the break and congrats to everyone for not having a runaway winner this time.  It is nice to see that the hits went to the teams with in the middle of the pack, so some teams get quality and some get quantity instead of some getting both.

June Quarry Group Break - Main Break Randomizations

Dennis from Too Many Grandersons was kind enough to run randomizations for the main break because I wanted one of the cards too and I run a fair break, but I wanted a completely impartial person to run the randomizer for the Eisenhower card.

The results of Dennis' foray into randomness are HERE.

BTW, the eligible teams for the Madison were all claimed teams that did not get a single insert in the break.  Congratulations to the winners and I will have the bonus "blaster" with one more hit to a currently hitless team tomorrow.

June Quarry Group Break - Box #4 1998 Pacific Aurora

Here we go with the final regular box from the June Quarry Group Break.

Before we continue, there is a bit of news to pass along.  Yesterday's Eisenhower pull has me excited beyond belief...so much so that I want my team (just the Rockies not every unpurchased team) to be involved in the randomization as well.  I figured since I counted the Rox to get a bonus included it was only fair that I get a shot at that beauty too.  In order to keep everything on the up and up I contacted a fellow blogger not involved in the break to conduct the randomizations and post them on his site after the break is finished (Thursday afternoon-ish).  Dennis from Too Many Grandersons stepped up and will be giving away the Ike (and the Madison) to someone then.

Now that the news is out of the way...we will move on to weather

And now sports (in the form of cards).  Let's start off with I LOVE PACIFIC.  Sure, there were way too many parallels, but the inserts are so creative and just great.  I picked up this box of 1998 Pacific Aurora off eBay for a good price and knew it had to be in the break.  The base set is very similar to 1997 Topps with red (AL) and green (NL) borders.  There is also 1 guaranteed Pennant Fever insert per pack.  The Pennant Fever insert has serially numbered colored parallels as well.  There are several other inserts that are sweet looking, but let's quit jabbering and view the results.

one per box shrink wrapped cube hit
1 Travis Lee - Diamondbacks
 FRONT & BACK

 TWO SIDES

TOP

I love all the Pacific inserts, and we got one extra Laser Cut than expected.  The cube hit was one of the worst names NOW, but remember Travis Lee was Bryce Harper in 1998.  It was a bit disappointing to not get any of the other two insert sets, but it is a mild disappointment.  The cards I decided to show off are mostly players on teams that you don't think of them playing with.  Joe Carter as an Oriole?  Chili Davis as a Yankee?  Cecil Fielder as an Angel?

Winners for the box
Diamondbacks
Braves
Indians
Blue Jays
Mariners

Well the DBacks are a winner yet again, even though it is a lesser name the cube is quite cool and is puzzling me on the best way to ship at the moment.  I'll figure something out.  This box belonged to Colbey and his Braves (and Mariners) getting 10 inserts including 2 of the laser cuts.  The Jays also got a good card with the Jose Cruz #'d to 20.  Once again, prospectors need to remember he was a hot rookie in 1998 too.

Losers for the box
Athletics
Brewers
Giants
Tigers
Padres

The A's had the fewest cards at 3, although one (Ben Grieve) was an insert.  No team really stood out as horrible in this box.  I only included the Padres on the list because Tony Gwynn was on the box cover and we didn't get any inserts of him, including the possible autographed #1s.

Break total for this box ONLY
Angels                       9          0          3          0
Astros                       7          0          1          0
Athletics                    2          0          1          0
Blue Jays                   4          0          4          0
