A place where Colorado Rockies baseball card collectors (all 3 of us) can waste some time reading about our favorite sport. The Rockies and their cards will be the primary focus, but I like to go off on tangents as well so anything and everything baseball related may be covered here.

July Quarry Group Break - The Randomizer Strikes Back

Hey guys, unfortunately the end has come for another fairly successful Quarry Group Break.  We aren't done yet though.  There is still the unfinished business surrounding the excess SkyBox Dugout Axcess cards.  After everyone got their single cards which consisted of an entire base set and an entire Doubleheaders set, we were left with the following.

One base set approximately 85% complete
One base set approximately 50% complete
One base set with about 6 cards & one extra Double Header

Sorry for the approximations, but I packed them before I counted them.

We also got

1 full set of Double Headers
1 full set of Double Headers
1 partial set of Double Headers a little over 50% complete

I have already ran two randomizations, one for base and one for the Double Headers.  Each and every team was eligible for both.  I randomized three times and got the following.

First up the base sets

Congratulations to the top three.  The Indians get the largest set, the Athletics get the middle set, and the Orioles get the small set.  That worked out great since all three teams were sort of middling at best in the break.

Now for the Double Headers

The Cubs and Marlins will get the full sets and the Phillies will get the partial.  Congratulations to all winners.  And to the winners of the partial sets, I hope I have given you a new addition to your want lists.

I have had fun with this break.  Sure we didn't get an Eisenhower relic like last month, but we got some cool cards this time.

The top 5 cards of the break (IMHO)
#1 2000 Pacific Crown Collection In the Cage Tony Gwynn

#2 2003 Fleer Focus Materialistic Oversize Roger Clemens

#3 2000 Pacific Crown Collection Premiere Date Alex Rodriguez #'d 25/27

#4 2007 SP Rookie Edition Felix Pie 1995 Autograph

#5 2006 Flair Showcase Derek Jeter Legacy Blue parallel #'d 047/150

Not a bad haul indeed and that's not including several other jerseys and autos.  I hope you guys had fun and come back next month for another inexpensive break.

I will not be giving hints in the mail for you guys as to boxes next month, because frankly I don't know yet.  I have some ideas though and I already have one box in hand.  So I will tell you now.

One box for next month is:

2000 Bowman Chrome
featuring rookie cards of Roy Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, Barry Zito, Francisco Rodriguez, Ben Sheets, Brandon Phillips, and many more

Hope to see you next month and my non-winning Gint-a-Cuffs box will start tomorrow right here.

July Quarry Group Break - Bonus Bonanza #2 2003 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition

Well here we go with the final box for the July Quarry Group Break.  I had already ordered two boxes for next month from eBay and, once we sold out, I decided to add whichever one arrived first to this month's break as a thank you to all you guys that have made this break a phenomenal success.  I am equally proud that I didn't give away the secret of what that box was.  I tend to have loose lips when it comes to break boxes, but no one other than myself knew what this was.  It's the little victories in life that make you smile at the end of the day.

That being said this is a box of 2003 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition (there is no other edition BTW) which is a small set consisting of 160 base cards and 20 short print rookies.  The kind of set that we are all familiar with.  Nothing groundbreaking here other than the AWESOME boxtopper, which will be going to one of you.  The minor flaw with this box is that some of the cards were a little stuck together.  Nothing major, but I wanted to let you know some came out with a few minor chips.  Ebay is great for selection, but not much recourse for something like this.  That being said I am not throwing my stash away because they don't look horrible at all.  Let's get started on the final box for this month.

OVERSIZED BOX TOPPER
Materialistic Oversize Roger Clemens - Yankees (THIS THING IS SWEET!)

BOX WINNERS
Yankees
Astros
Brewers
Mets
Blue Jays

The Yankees were a big winner here with two of the six short prints including the Matsui rookie along with the Clemens box topper.  Sure it is a manufactured relic, but can you think of a better looking one (card subject not taken into account).  It wouldn't be a Quarry group break without a hit for the Astros.  After pestering Sam for the previous two months with great cards being pulled, the Astros were fairly quiet until this box.  The Brewers were June's worst team with a TOTAL of 7 cards in the whole break.  This month they are a top 10 team, even though Sexson may not be as big a name as he once was.  BABenny scored twice with this box with the Mets coming out with two different Piazza inserts along with several other base cards.  The Jays also pulled out a short print and a Carlos Delgado insert.  Nice to see them get a good box also.

BOX LOSERS
Tigers
Royals
Rangers
Indians
Rockies

Once again a great group break box, because it was hard to pick out losers.  The Tigers had the fewest base cards of any team (other than the Brewers who got a hit) so they "top" the list.  The Rangers had such a great main break, I am sure Brian is not shedding any tears over their relatively poor showing here.  The Indians had another below average box, but things may still pick up for them.  My team (the Rockies) was once again among the worst.  I don't ever want to be the best team in one of my breaks, but to be out of the bottom 10 once wouldn't be a bad thing.  Oh well Cubs fans say wait 'til next year...this Rockies fan will say wait 'til next month.

July Quarry Group Break - Bonus Bonanza #1 1994 Stadium Club Series 2

Okay here we go with the first box of this month's Bonus Bonanza.  This is 1994 Stadium Club Series 2 which features 12 cards per pack including 1 Golden Rainbow parallel.  There are also an insert set which will be featured here, Dugout Dirt, which showcases the stars of 1993.  Finally there are two different 1 per box sets included, Bowman Preview and the parallel First Day Issue.  There are a couple of multiple team cards which I have given to the team ranking lower on the stats from yesterday (unless more than one showed then both got one).  Also since the Rays and DBacks are not represented in this set, they will get the checklist cards that show up assigned based on score also (Rays first).  I know it's not much but it's better than nothing.  Let's see how this box works out.

BOX WINNERS
Red Sox
Reds
Dodgers
Twins
Phillies

The Reds and Red Sox each pulled out 3 of the Golden Rainbows.  The Phillies got one along with the Bowman Preview 1 per box card.  Man, it is hard calling a 17 year old set a preview.  Of course, it is also hard thinking of 1994 as 17 years ago.

BOX LOSERS

Other than the shutout D-Backs and 1 card Rays, there weren't any BIG losers of the box.  If the Giants hadn't received the 2 Bonds inserts, they would only have gotten 3 cards and would be the big loser.  Who am I kidding the Giants are always losers (sorry Rockies bias showing there).  Everyone gets some cards here, so not a bad showing for anyone really.

July Quarry Group Break - Stats and Other Stuff

Hey guys.  The main portion of this month's break has now concluded.  That means it is time for the team stats for the break.  I don't know how many of you actually enjoy looking at the stats as much as me, but they do serve a couple of purposes.  First, they make my breaks different than everyone else's.  Second and more importantly, I use them to determine ownership of cards between multiple teams.  That hasn't happened yet this month (but will soon).  Either way, I hope you enjoy the nerdity (is that a word?) that will follow.

Also some questions arose about the odd names for the Dugout Axcess insert sets and subsets.  I will show and TRY to explain them here.  Basically the set took a word or phrase that a player used to describe certain events that would happen in a game.

Little Dawgs - Barry Larkin's nickname for new players.  This is the subset that made me think a lot less of Mr. Larkin.  It is just so egotistical, like he was too good to learn your name even if you were a teammate.  I think it is funny that "Little Dawg" Todd Helton (and a couple of others) has had arguably a better career than Larkin (not a Hall of Famer in my opinion).

Dishwashers - It doesn't really say why Dishwashers is used, but it does refer to the better pitchers of the time.  Has anyone else ever heard the term used?  Maybe it is common and I have just not heard it.

Gronks - Greg Gagne's (really?) nickname for a home run hitter.  He said they remind him of characters from the Flintstones carrying big clubs.  For those of you too young to remember the Flintstones, that was a television show in the 1960s that carried into syndication until the early 1990s.  I watched it as a kid, but it was old when I saw it.  Yes, I do feel really old by feeling that I need to explain what the Flintstones are.

Now onto the stats...first the raw total stats (base, parallel, insert, hit)

Angels                         28.5     17.5     26        18                    90

Obviously this is only one way to look at break winners, but it works to an extent.  The top 5 has the usual suspects (Yanks, Red Sox, Braves) along with a couple of A.L. West foes that usually are middle of the pack or worse.  The Rangers were in the bottom 10 in both the May and June breaks, so congrats to Brian.  The Giants, Tigers, and Brewers also had significant jumps from the previous two break.  Since a few teams moved up, the reverse had to be true also with the Phillies, Orioles, and Angels having particularly disappointing breaks compared to their usual status.  But we do have the bonus rounds coming up and there are 3 more hits (ALL to teams without hits so far) along with lots of other good cards.
